SCANDAL is an all-female pop-rock band from Osaka, formed in 2008.

Overview[]

All members attended Caless Vocal & Dance School. TOMOMI and RINA attended the Osaka branch, while HARUNA and MAMI attended the Nagoya branch. While they went to separate schools, they were acquainted with each other and all started learning how to play instruments while at school. They formed their band on August 21, 2006 in Osaka. The band was named after an adult goods store across from one of the school branches. Initially, they performed outside in Osaka Castle park. In 2007, they were chosen to perform the theme song 『START』 for the PSP version of the game Star Ocean: Second Evolution which released in Spring 2008.

Since 2008, they have released 3 indie singles, 27 major label singles, 10 original albums, 1 mini-album, 3 "best of" albums, and 1 cover album. They have been extremely successful with all their singles reaching the top 40 of the Oricon singles charts, all but the first 2 major label singles reached the top 20, 18 reaching the top 10, and 9 reaching the top 5. Their highest charting single was Sun Scandalous (『太陽スキャンダラス』, 2012) peaking at #2. So far the first 9 of their albums have charted in the top 5 of the Oricon album charts while the 10th charting is pending. Their 2016 album 『YELLOW』 and their 2017 "best of" album 『SCANDAL』 both peaked at #2.

Over the years, they have performed many, many tie-in songs of all sorts. They have performed around 10 anime tie-in songs, most notably 2 OPs for the shounen anime Bleach (2004). They have performed around 8 movie and TV drama tie-in songs. The rest of the over 40 other tie-in songs were for CMs, music shows, sports shows, variety TV shows, and a few video games.

They've held over 30 one-man (or main act) live tours with 5 or so including venues outside Japan, but mostly in Asia or Europe. Only 3 tours included North America.

Trivia[]

  • All the band members participate in songwriting, especially writing lyrics.

  • HARUNA is good friends with actress Toda Erika (戸田恵梨香) who started as a big fan of the band, but started a friendship with HARUNA mostly. They have been friends since at least 2012 and probably since at least 2010.
